Opening the conversation
The first thing you should do when telling someone bad news is to empathize with them. Be direct, but don’t tiptoe around the subject and make it harder than necessary for them to understand what’s going on. For example: “I wanted let you know that your car needs extensive repairs so we can avoid any confusion later on down the road.” Or “The good news is I have a fairly easy fix! The bad news though…it’s not something my shop does”.
